Jayne Vidheecharoen from the Art Center of Design in California has made a TV prototype that convert physical hands into virtual ones.

Google Streetview appears as a back drop courtesy of a green screen and digital objects can be manipulated and moved around at will.

In Charlie And The Chocolate Factory we see spoiled Mike Teevee converted into a million pixels, miniaturised and beamed into a TV set.

While Vidheecharoen is some way from achieving that, she explains that she does have an extra trick up her sleeve – her boxes are connected to the internet, meaning the computerised space can be shared with other people.

She said: ‘Looking at Google Streetview as a magic circle it becomes a kind of virtual public space, frozen in time, with untapped potential.

‘I am trying to bring it to life and activate the space so it can be more like a real public space, subject to fiction, mutability and idiosyncratic uses by multiple people.’

What she’s achieved looks like magic, but the components and materials are all dirt cheap and not necessarily hi-tech.

She lists them on her thesis statement as ‘foam core, duct tape, fabric scrap, a desk lamp, an end table, a borrowed monitor and the cheapest webcam possible’.

However, she is very keen to make improvements and sees enormous commercial potential in what she’s invented.

‘I can speculate about a ton of potential ways people might use these boxes, from building entire parallel worlds to cross-country puppet shows,’ she adds.

Willy Wonka would undoubtedly be impressed.

Vidheecharoen attracted funding for her project through Kickstarter, a website that showcases creative projects and lets members of the public pledge money to develop them.
